Every ceramide cream says ceramides. Few say where they sit.
Ceramide creams are everywhere, but most don't tell you which ceramides they use or how much. Some list them near the end of a long ingredient list, after the fragrance, and let the word on the front do the selling.
Ours are plant ceramides, 26th and 27th of 35 ingredients, used at a fraction of a percent. The butters, oils and humectants higher up the list do most of what you'll feel. We'd rather you bought it knowing that.

What's in the bottle.
This formula doesn't have consumer-perception testing, so instead of results we show you exactly what it's made of. The research behind its ingredients comes further down.

Plant ceramides, and the lipids around them
Glycosphingolipids · Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) · Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba)
The skin's outer layer is held together by three families of lipids in roughly equal amounts: ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. This cream contains a member of each family: plant ceramides with a sugar attached (glycosphingolipids), plant sterols from olive oil, and palmitic and stearic acids.
It isn't a skin-identical lipid mix, and it hasn't been tested as one. In barrier studies, the ratio of those lipids mattered, and the wrong mix slowed recovery. So we make no barrier claim beyond what the ingredients are known to do. Cocoa and shea butter, jojoba and sunflower oils sit higher on the list and do most of the softening you'll feel.
What each ingredient does, and how we know
Evidence refers to published research on each ingredient, usually in other products or taken by mouth. None of it is a test of this cream.
How it compares with a layer of petroleum jelly.
Petroleum jelly is still the benchmark for sealing skin. If your skin is cracked or very sore, it may help you more than any cream, ours included.
What studies show about each ingredient.
These studies test an ingredient, usually in a different product or taken by mouth. They explain why each ingredient is in this cream. They are not results for this cream.
Plant ceramides
60 women with dry skin took wheat glucosylceramide capsules or a placebo every day for 60 days.
Skin hydration rose and water loss fell compared with placebo.
The ceramides were swallowed, not applied, and the authors work for companies involved in the ingredient and its testing.
Skin lipid mixtures
Mixtures of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids on aged mouse skin and on six men aged about 80, after the barrier was stripped.
A cholesterol-heavy mix sped barrier recovery. A fatty-acid-heavy mix slowed it in mice.
Pure skin lipids at set ratios. Our cream isn't that mix.
Sunflower seed oil
In a small study of 19 adults across two groups, one group applied sunflower seed oil to one forearm and olive oil to the other, twice a day for four weeks.
Sunflower seed oil preserved the skin barrier and improved hydration. Olive oil weakened the barrier.
A small study of the pure oils on the forearm, not in a cream.
Cocoa, shea and plant oils
A review of research on plant oils and butters applied to skin.
Shea and several plant oils showed barrier-supporting and softening properties in the studies reviewed.
A review of small studies, not a trial of our cream.
Night-time water loss
16 healthy adults had their skin measured at set times across 24 hours.
Water loss through the skin was highest in the evening, around 8 pm, and lowest in the morning.
It measured skin rhythms. It didn't test any cream.
Glycerin
A review of research on glycerol and the skin.
Glycerol improves hydration of the outer layer and supports barrier function.
A review. Our glycerin percentage isn't published.

This cream contains Parfum for a delicate white-flower scent with fresh lavender. Two ingredients on the EU allergen list are named on the label: Linalool and Limonene, both from natural essential oils. It's the lowest count of any cream we sell, but it is not a fragrance-free product.
If your skin is reactive, patch test on your inner forearm once a day for five days before using it on your face.

Questions, answered honestly.
Not exactly. Ours are plant ceramides with a sugar attached, called glycosphingolipids. Your skin makes similar sugar-linked ceramides and converts them into its own ceramides. Whether applied plant ceramides are converted the same way hasn't been shown, so we don't claim they are.
The percentage isn't published. The plant ceramides are 26th and 27th of 35 ingredients, after the fragrance, so they make up a fraction of a percent. Plant ceramide complexes like this are designed to be used at low levels.
From our formula's certification data and its ingredient list. This cream doesn't have consumer testing, so we don't show results.
No. It contains Parfum and two allergens from the EU list, both named: Linalool and Limonene.
It's labelled gluten free. Plant ceramides with this ingredient name are often extracted from wheat and then purified. If you have a wheat allergy or coeliac disease, email us before buying and we'll send you the details for this batch.
If your skin is cracked or very sore, petroleum jelly seals it more strongly than any cream, and it's cheap. It adds no water, though, and feels greasy. This cream softens and helps skin hold water while feeling like a cream.
Water loss through the skin tends to be highest in the evening, and a rich cream is easier to wear while you sleep. You can use it in the morning too, with sunscreen on top.
It contains no vitamin A or retinoids. We're not your doctor, though. Show the ingredient list to your midwife or GP and let them decide.
Use it daily for 60 days. If your skin hasn't changed the way you hoped, email us between day 60 and day 90 with your order number and a photo of the bottle, and we refund what you paid for it. Keep the bottle; there is nothing to send back. The 60-Day Promise covers your first order only, conditions apply: up to two units, one claim per person, and delivery charges aren't refunded. If your skin reacts at any point, stop using it and email us: we refund you in full straight away, delivery included. This sits on top of your 14-day right of withdrawal and two-year legal guarantee.
Your night cream arrives on the interval you choose, at 10% off, with free delivery. You can skip a delivery, change the interval or cancel at any time from your account or by email. There's no minimum term. Used every evening, a 50 ml bottle lasts around two months, so the one-bottle subscription every two months fits most people.
