Ceramide Barrier Night Cream
Why people stop trusting ceramide creams

Every ceramide cream says ceramides. Few say where they sit.

Ceramide creams are everywhere, but most don't tell you which ceramides they use or how much. Some list them near the end of a long ingredient list, after the fragrance, and let the word on the front do the selling.

Ours are plant ceramides, 26th and 27th of 35 ingredients, used at a fraction of a percent. The butters, oils and humectants higher up the list do most of what you'll feel. We'd rather you bought it knowing that.

Ceramide Barrier Night Cream
The hero ingredient

Plant ceramides, and the lipids around them

Glycosphingolipids · Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) · Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba)

The skin's outer layer is held together by three families of lipids in roughly equal amounts: ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. This cream contains a member of each family: plant ceramides with a sugar attached (glycosphingolipids), plant sterols from olive oil, and palmitic and stearic acids.

It isn't a skin-identical lipid mix, and it hasn't been tested as one. In barrier studies, the ratio of those lipids mattered, and the wrong mix slowed recovery. So we make no barrier claim beyond what the ingredients are known to do. Cocoa and shea butter, jojoba and sunflower oils sit higher on the list and do most of the softening you'll feel.

Petroleum jelly is still the benchmark for sealing skin. If your skin is cracked or very sore, it may help you more than any cream, ours included.

The research

What studies show about each ingredient.

These studies test an ingredient, usually in a different product or taken by mouth. They explain why each ingredient is in this cream. They are not results for this cream.

Plant ceramides

Bizot et al., 2017 · Cosmetics
What was tested

60 women with dry skin took wheat glucosylceramide capsules or a placebo every day for 60 days.

What they found

Skin hydration rose and water loss fell compared with placebo.

What it doesn't prove

The ceramides were swallowed, not applied, and the authors work for companies involved in the ingredient and its testing.

Skin lipid mixtures

Zettersten et al., 1997 · Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
What was tested

Mixtures of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids on aged mouse skin and on six men aged about 80, after the barrier was stripped.

What they found

A cholesterol-heavy mix sped barrier recovery. A fatty-acid-heavy mix slowed it in mice.

What it doesn't prove

Pure skin lipids at set ratios. Our cream isn't that mix.

Sunflower seed oil

Danby et al., 2013 · Pediatric Dermatology
What was tested

In a small study of 19 adults across two groups, one group applied sunflower seed oil to one forearm and olive oil to the other, twice a day for four weeks.

What they found

Sunflower seed oil preserved the skin barrier and improved hydration. Olive oil weakened the barrier.

What it doesn't prove

A small study of the pure oils on the forearm, not in a cream.

Cocoa, shea and plant oils

Lin, Zhong & Santiago, 2017 · International Journal of Molecular Sciences (review)
What was tested

A review of research on plant oils and butters applied to skin.

What they found

Shea and several plant oils showed barrier-supporting and softening properties in the studies reviewed.

What it doesn't prove

A review of small studies, not a trial of our cream.

Night-time water loss

Yosipovitch et al., 1998 · Journal of Investigative Dermatology
What was tested

16 healthy adults had their skin measured at set times across 24 hours.

What they found

Water loss through the skin was highest in the evening, around 8 pm, and lowest in the morning.

What it doesn't prove

It measured skin rhythms. It didn't test any cream.

Glycerin

Fluhr, Darlenski & Surber, 2008 · British Journal of Dermatology (review)
What was tested

A review of research on glycerol and the skin.

What they found

Glycerol improves hydration of the outer layer and supports barrier function.

What it doesn't prove

A review. Our glycerin percentage isn't published.
