Every ingredient discussed here is in the oil. The studies tested single oils, usually in other products, and we say so each time.

Key takeaways
1An oil and a moisturiser do different jobs. A moisturiser adds water. An oil adds lipids and slows water loss. Dry skin usually needs both. 2Argan has the best human evidence in the blend. In a 60-day study of 60 postmenopausal women, argan oil applied to the forearm improved three measures of elasticity. 3The other oils rest on reviews. Jojoba, avocado, borage, evening primrose and almond have supporting research, mostly small studies. 4It contains nut oils. Sweet almond and apricot kernel oil. If you're allergic to tree nuts, don't use it. 5It's for dry and mature skin. Oily or breakout-prone skin may prefer to skip face oils.

Face oils have a reputation problem. Some people swear by them; others picture a greasy shine and clogged pores. The truth is simpler: for dry and mature skin, a well-made oil does a specific job that creams alone often can't, and for oily skin it's usually not needed.

This guide explains that job, then goes through all eleven organic oils and extracts in our Nourishing Facial Oil: what the research found, what it doesn't prove, and where the evidence is thin. If you only want the product, the oil page has everything in one place.

01What a face oil actually does

Your skin keeps itself hydrated with two systems working together. Inside the outer layer, water-binding molecules hold moisture in place. Around them, a mix of lipids, including the oils your skin produces, forms a barrier that slows water escaping into the air.

Moisturisers mostly help the first system: they add water and humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid. A face oil helps the second. Plant oils supply fatty acids similar to the ones in your skin's own barrier, and a thin layer on the surface slows the rate at which water evaporates. The result is skin that feels softer and stays comfortable for longer.

That's why an oil isn't a replacement for a moisturiser in most routines. It's the step that helps you keep what your moisturiser gave you.

In one lineEleven organic oils and extracts, 100% natural origin, certified COSMOS Organic, pressed in as the last step for dry and mature skin.

02Who needs a face oil

Skin produces less oil with age, especially after menopause, and cold weather, central heating and air conditioning all speed up water loss. If your skin feels tight within an hour of moisturising, looks dull or rough, or develops dry patches in winter, an oil is likely to help.

If your skin is oily or breakout-prone, you may not need one at all, and some oils can feel heavy. There's no rule that says every routine should include a face oil; it's a tool for a specific problem.

03Face oil vs moisturiser

Face oil Cream moisturiser
What it is Oils and plant extracts, usually no water Water, oils and emulsifiers
Main job Adds lipids and slows water loss Adds water and humectants
Preservatives Not needed without water Needed
Order Last, after moisturiser Before any oil
Best for Dry, mature, tight-feeling skin Most skin types

We go into this in more detail, including when one is enough, in face oil or moisturiser?

04Oleic or linoleic: matching oils to your skin

Plant oils are mostly made of fatty acids, and two matter most for skin. Oleic acid is rich and cushioning; it sits on the surface and slows water loss, which dry skin tends to love. Linoleic acid is lighter and is one of the fatty acids the skin barrier uses directly. Oily and breakout-prone skin often has lower linoleic acid in its own oil, which is one reason lighter, linoleic-rich oils are usually suggested for it.

Our blend leans rich, as a nourishing oil for dry and mature skin should. Argan, avocado, sweet almond, apricot kernel and plum seed bring plenty of oleic acid. Borage, evening primrose and blueberry seed add linoleic, gamma-linolenic and omega-3 fatty acids for balance, and jojoba keeps the whole thing light. If your skin is oily, that balance is probably more than you need.

Oil Mostly Feel
Argan Oleic and linoleic Medium, silky
Avocado Oleic Rich
Sweet almond, apricot kernel Oleic Soft, medium
Borage, evening primrose Linoleic and gamma-linolenic Light
Blueberry seed Linoleic and alpha-linolenic Very light
Jojoba Wax esters Light, skin-like

05Keeping it fresh

Oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids can oxidise with heat, light and air, and an oxidised oil smells sharp and feels less pleasant on skin. Vitamin E in the formula slows that down. You can help too: keep the cap closed, store the bottle away from direct sunlight and radiators, and use it within the period after opening printed on the pack. If it ever smells rancid, stop using it.

06How we rate the evidence

Label What it means
Human study People used it and their skin was measured with instruments.
Review A summary of earlier studies. Useful context, only as good as the studies in it.
Composition What an oil or extract contains. Tells you nothing about results on skin.

None of these studies tested our blend. This formula doesn't have its own consumer testing yet, so we don't show results for it.

07Argan oil

Organic argan kernel oil

Evidence: human study

Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the argan tree, which grows almost only in south-west Morocco. It's rich in oleic and linoleic acid, vitamin E and plant sterols, and it has long been used on skin and hair there.

StudyBoucetta et al., 2015. Clinical Interventions in Aging.
What was tested60 postmenopausal women aged 49 to 61 were split into two groups: one ate argan oil daily, the other olive oil. Both groups applied cosmetic argan oil to the left forearm every day for 60 days, leaving the right forearm untreated. Elasticity was measured with an instrument at the start, after 30 days and after 60 days.
What they foundOn the treated forearm, all three elasticity measures (gross, net and biological elasticity) improved significantly, and the skin's resonance running time decreased, another sign of better elasticity. No side effects were reported.
What it doesn't proveIt tested the forearm, not the face, and only postmenopausal women. There was no placebo oil for the topical part, so some of the change could come from applying any oil. And 60 days is short.
In our formulaOrganic argan kernel oil, seventh of 21 ingredients. The percentage isn't disclosed.
Our readingOne of very few cosmetic oils with instrument-measured human data. It's a good reason to make argan the hero, and still a small, short study.

08Jojoba oil

Organic jojoba seed oil

Evidence: review

Jojoba is first on the list, so it's the largest part of the blend. It isn't strictly an oil but a liquid wax, made of wax esters that resemble those in the skin's own oil. That's why it spreads easily and doesn't feel greasy, and why it's the base of so many face oils.

StudyPazyar et al., 2013. Giornale Italiano di Dermatologia e Venereologia (review).
What they foundAcross the research reviewed, jojoba showed anti-inflammatory activity and wide use in products for dry and ageing skin.
What it doesn't proveIt's a review of mixed, mostly small studies. Count it as supporting evidence.

09Avocado and borage oils

Organic avocado oil and organic borage seed oil

Evidence: review

Avocado oil is rich and cushioning, high in oleic acid and plant sterols. Borage seed oil is one of the richest plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid, a fatty acid involved in the skin barrier.

StudyLin, Zhong & Santiago, 2017. International Journal of Molecular Sciences (review).
What was testedA review of the research on plant oils applied to the skin, including avocado, borage, jojoba, argan and others.
What they foundBoth avocado and borage oils showed properties that support the skin barrier and help calm the skin in the studies reviewed.
What it doesn't proveThe underlying studies are mostly small, and a review isn't a trial of our blend.

10Almond, apricot and evening primrose

Organic sweet almond, apricot kernel and evening primrose oils

Evidence: review

Sweet almond oil is one of the oldest emollients in skin care: soft, well tolerated and light. Apricot kernel oil is similar. Evening primrose oil is rich in linoleic and gamma-linolenic acid.

StudyBlaak & Staib, 2022. International Journal of Cosmetic Science (review).
What was testedAn updated review of sweet almond, evening primrose and jojoba oils in skin care.
What they foundThe review describes sweet almond oil as a well-tolerated emollient for dry skin, and evening primrose oil's fatty-acid profile and use for dry and sensitive skin.
What it doesn't proveMuch of the stronger evidence for evening primrose comes from taking it by mouth; evidence for applying it to skin is more limited.
A nut allergy noteSweet almond and apricot kernel oils come from tree nuts and kernels. If you're allergic to almonds or other tree nuts, don't use this oil.

11Sea buckthorn, tomato and cloudberry

Organic fruit extracts

Evidence: composition

Sea buckthorn, tomato and cloudberry fruit extracts are rich in carotenoids, the orange and red pigments that include beta-carotene and lycopene, along with other antioxidants. They give the oil its warm colour, and antioxidants help protect the oils from going off.

We'll be plain: we found no human trials of these extracts applied to skin as part of a face oil. They're in the formula for their antioxidants and colour, and we make no claim beyond that.

Why we tell you thisLots of oils list every extract as an "active". Most aren't. Knowing which ingredients carry evidence helps you judge any product, ours included.

12Plum and blueberry seed oils

Plum seed oil has a soft, almond-like feel. Organic blueberry seed oil is light and rich in omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid. Both round out the texture of the blend. Like the fruit extracts, they're here for feel and nourishment; we found no human trials of either on skin.

13Why there's no water, and what else is in it

The formula contains no water. Without water, there's nothing for bacteria or mould to grow in, so no preservatives are needed. Vitamin E (tocopherol) is there instead, to protect the plant oils from oxidation.

The remaining ingredients are light emollients made from plants: decyl cocoate, undecane and tridecane. They make the oil spread thinly and absorb fast, so it feels silky rather than heavy. They carry no skin claims of their own.

Group Ingredients Role
Hero oil Argan kernel oil The best-evidenced oil in the blend
Base Jojoba seed oil Light, skin-like feel
Rich oils Avocado, sweet almond, apricot kernel, plum seed Cushioning, softening
Barrier oils Borage, evening primrose, blueberry seed Linoleic, gamma-linolenic and omega-3 fatty acids
Fruit extracts Sea buckthorn, tomato, cloudberry Carotenoids and antioxidants
Antioxidant Tocopherol (vitamin E) Keeps the oils fresh
Light emollients Decyl cocoate, undecane, tridecane Silky, fast-absorbing feel
Scent Parfum Warm dried fruits with a touch of spice

All 21 ingredients are printed in order on the product page.

14Scent, nuts and allergens

The oil is scented with Parfum: warm dried fruits with a touch of spice. Four fragrance allergens are declared on the label: Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol and Geraniol, all from natural essential oils. It isn't a fragrance-free product.

It also contains sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oil. If you're allergic to almonds or other tree nuts, please don't use it. If your skin is reactive, patch test on your inner forearm once a day for five days first.

15How to choose a face oil

✓It suits your skin type. Rich, oleic-acid oils such as argan and avocado suit dry skin; oily skin often prefers lighter linoleic-rich oils, or none.
✓The full ingredient list is published, in order. Ours has 21, all printed.
✓Nut oils and allergens are named. Ours contains almond and apricot kernel oils and declares four fragrance allergens.
✓The evidence is described honestly. Most oils rest on reviews and composition data. A brand should say which is which.
✓It's protected from going off. Look for an antioxidant such as vitamin E, and keep the bottle away from heat and light.
✓It's independently certified. Ours is COSMOS Organic, checked by Ecocert Greenlife.

If you want an oil that also carries a retinol alternative, our Natural Retinol Alternative Oil Serum puts bakuchiol in six organic oils. Which face oil is right for you? compares the two.

16How to use it

Step Evening Morning (very dry skin)
1 Cleanse Cleanse or rinse
2 Serum, if you use one Serum, if you use one
3 Moisturiser Moisturiser
4 Two or three drops of the oil, pressed in One or two drops
5 Nothing else needed SPF 30 or higher, always

Warm the drops between your fingertips and press them over face and neck rather than rubbing. Avoid direct contact with the eyes. Our Retinol Alternative Moisturiser is a good partner: moisturiser first, oil last. A 30 ml bottle lasts around three months at a few drops each evening. A drop also softens dry lips and cuticles.

17Who it suits

It suits you if your skin is dry, mature or feels tight after cleansing; your moisturiser alone isn't enough in winter; or you want a simple oil for the last step of your evening with every ingredient named.

Skip it if you're allergic to almonds or other tree nuts; you need a fragrance-free product; or your skin is oily or breakout-prone and dislikes oils. If you want a retinol alternative in your oil, choose our Natural Retinol Alternative Oil Serum instead.

18What it adds up to

This is a well-built nourishing oil for dry and mature skin. Its hero, argan, has a small but instrument-measured human study behind it. Its supporting oils rest on reviews, and its fruit extracts are there for antioxidants and colour. We've told you which is which.

Used as the last step over a moisturiser, it does the job face oils are genuinely good at: softening skin and helping it hold on to its moisture. If that's what your skin needs, this is the oil we'd point you to.

19Your questions, answered

Is face oil good for dry skin?

Yes. A face oil adds lipids and slows water loss, which helps dry skin stay softer and more comfortable. Use it after a moisturiser for the best result.

Does argan oil help with elasticity?

In one 60-day study of 60 postmenopausal women, argan oil applied to the forearm improved three instrument measures of skin elasticity. It's a small study on the forearm, not the face.

Should I use face oil before or after moisturiser?

After. Moisturiser adds water; the oil goes last to help keep it in.

Can I use face oil every day?

Yes. Most people use a few drops each evening; very dry skin may use it in the morning too, before SPF.

Is the Nourishing Facial Oil nut-free?

No. It contains sweet almond and apricot kernel oils.

How long does a 30 ml face oil last?

Around three months at a few drops each evening.

Does the 60-Day Promise apply?

Yes, on your first order, conditions apply. Use it daily for 60 days, and if your skin hasn't changed the way you hoped, email us between day 60 and day 90 for a refund of the product price.
