Barrier Support Skincare for a Compromised Skin Barrier
A healthy skin barrier is a layer of cells held together by lipids — ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. When that mortar is depleted, water leaves faster than it should and irritants get in more easily than they should. Skin stings when you apply things, flakes in patches, looks dull, and reacts to products it used to tolerate.
Over-exfoliation is the usual cause. Cold weather, hot water, retinoids and simply doing too much all contribute.
What helps
Three things, in order of importance.
Stop doing the thing that caused it. No acids, no scrubs, no retinol, no clay masks. This is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters most.
Replace the lipids. Ceramides applied topically help support the barrier’s structure. So do plant butters and oils with a similar fatty-acid profile — shea, cocoa, jojoba, which sits close in structure to skin’s own sebum.
Hold water in. Humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and sodium PCA draw water into the upper layers. An occlusive layer over the top slows how fast it escapes, which matters most overnight when transepidermal water loss peaks.
What is on this page
Formulas built around that logic rather than around a single headline ingredient. Ceramides with cocoa and shea butter for night use. A fragrance-free overnight cream at 42% organic content, the highest in our range. Barrier lipids in a light eye cream for the thinnest skin on the face.
Some are fragrance-free and some are lightly scented. Every one tells you which on the front of the label, because if your barrier is compromised, fragrance is a variable worth controlling deliberately rather than by accident.
How long it takes
Longer than you want. Give any barrier routine four weeks before judging it, and expect the first improvement in comfort rather than in appearance. Skin usually stops stinging before it stops looking dry.
If your skin is actively broken or weeping, this is a matter for a pharmacist or doctor rather than a moisturiser.
