The research behind our Anti-Ageing Performance Duo
What peptides really do, why a serum and a cream work better together and in order, the research behind every key ingredient in the duo, and what none of it proves.
Every ingredient discussed here is in the duo. The studies tested ingredients, usually in other products, and we say so each time.
Anti-ageing skincare has a complexity problem. Routines grow to five, six, seven steps, each product bought separately and layered by guesswork. Most of them stop within weeks, and skin only changes with consistency.
Our Anti-Ageing Performance Duo is built the other way: two full-size products, designed to layer, used in the same order every day. This guide explains how the two steps work together and goes through the research behind every key ingredient, including where it's early and where it's missing. If you only want the set, the duo page has everything in one place.
01Why simple routines work better
The single biggest predictor of whether skincare works is whether you keep using it. Most visible changes, especially to texture and fine lines, take eight to twelve weeks of daily use. Every extra step, waiting time or rule makes a routine easier to skip.
A two-step routine that goes on in the same order morning and evening, with no adjustment period and nothing to keep separate, is one most people can keep. That's the whole idea behind the duo: fewer decisions, more consistency.
02What a serum does, and what a cream does
| Serum | Cream | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Light, fast-absorbing | Richer, cushioning |
| Main job | Deliver actives to the skin's outer layers | Hold in hydration, soften, protect |
| Actives in the duo | 2% hexapeptide-11 ingredient, 1% ginkgo, dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline | Marine ferment, betaine, shea, avocado |
| Shared | Aloe base, two forms of hyaluronic acid | Aloe base, two forms of hyaluronic acid |
Serums are mostly water-based and light, which lets their actives spread evenly across clean skin without a heavy layer in the way. Creams contain more lipids, which slow water loss and keep skin comfortable for hours. One without the other works; together they cover both jobs.
03Why the order matters
The general rule in skincare is thinnest to thickest: water-based products first, richer ones after. If you put a cream on first, its lipids form a layer that a light serum then has to spread over, rather than reaching the skin directly.
So: serum on clean skin, a minute to settle, then the cream. In the morning, finish with SPF. That's three steps, and one of them is sunscreen, which does more for skin ageing than any cream.
04What peptides are, in plain terms
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins such as collagen. In skincare, some peptides are designed to act as signals: small messages that may prompt skin cells to do more of certain jobs, such as maintaining their own structures or defending against stress.
They're popular because they're generally gentle, work morning and night, and don't cause the adjustment period retinol does. The catch is that evidence varies a lot from one peptide to another, and much of it comes from the companies that make them. So it's worth looking at each peptide individually, which is what we do next.
05How we rate the evidence
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Human trial | People used it and it was measured, ideally against a comparison. |
| Small human test | A short test on a few volunteers, often inside a larger lab study. |
| Review | A summary of earlier studies. |
| Lab | Cells in a dish. Mechanism, not results on a face. |
| Maker's data | Tests run or paid for by the company that sells the ingredient. |
None of these studies tested the duo. It doesn't have its own consumer testing yet, so we don't show results for it.
06Hexapeptide-11
Hexapeptide-11
Evidence: lab + small human testHexapeptide-11 is a six-amino-acid peptide (phenylalanine, valine, alanine, proline, phenylalanine, proline) first isolated from yeast and now made to high purity. It's the hero of the serum.

07Ginkgo biloba
Ginkgo biloba leaf extract
Evidence: labThe serum contains 1% ginkgo biloba leaf extract. Ginkgo leaves are rich in flavonoids and terpenoids, antioxidants that have been studied widely in the lab. We found no human trial of ginkgo extract applied to the face at 1% in a serum like ours, so we list it as a supporting antioxidant rather than a headline active.
08Hyaluronic acid, in both steps
Hyaluronic acid, two forms in each product
Evidence: human trial- Pavicic T. et al. Efficacy of cream-based novel formulations of hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights in anti-wrinkle treatment. J Drugs Dermatol 10(9):990–1000, 2011.
09Sodium PCA and dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline
In the serum
Evidence: review + maker's dataSodium PCA is part of the skin's own natural moisturising factor; a 1981 review (Clar and Fourtanier) found creams with at least 2% PCA or PCA salt improved dry skin. Dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline is an oil-soluble form of an amino acid found in skin; its maker reports firmer-looking skin but hasn't published the study details, and we found no independent trial. We cover both in depth in the research behind our moisturiser.

Alteromonas ferment extract, in the cream

11Betaine, shea and avocado
The cream's comfort ingredients
Evidence: reviewBetaine is a plant-derived humectant, originally from sugar beet, that helps skin hold water. Organic shea butter and avocado oil are rich, softening lipids that slow water loss. A 2017 review of plant oils and butters applied to skin (Lin, Zhong and Santiago) describes the barrier-supporting and softening properties of both. That's what lets the cream seal in the serum and keep skin comfortable all day.
The cream also contains organic lingonberry, black currant, echinacea and elder flower extracts, rich in antioxidants. We found no human trials of these extracts in a day cream, so we make no claims for them beyond antioxidant support.

12Aloe, the shared base
Organic aloe leaf juice
Evidence: small human trialBoth products start with organic aloe leaf juice rather than plain water, so the base of each formula does something too. In a two-week study (Dal'Belo et al., 2006), creams containing aloe raised the water content of the skin's outer layer in 20 women. Organic jojoba oil, second or third on each list, adds a light, skin-like feel. We cover both in the research behind our serum.

13The mineral pigments
The serum contains iron oxides (CI 77491), which give it a soft peach tint. The cream contains mica, titanium dioxide (CI 77891) and tin oxide, which reflect light and give skin a soft, radiant finish straight after application.
That finish is real and pleasant, and it's optical: light bouncing off the skin. It isn't a change in the skin itself. We'd rather you knew which effects are instant and cosmetic and which build with daily use.
14Peptides vs retinol
| Retinol | Peptide duo | |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence | Decades of clinical trials | A lab study and a small elasticity test for hexapeptide-11 |
| First weeks | Dryness, flaking, stinging are common | No adjustment period expected |
| When | Evenings, introduced slowly | Morning and evening |
| EU rules | 0.3% retinol equivalent limit in face products | Not restricted |
| In pregnancy | Generally avoided | No vitamin A; ask your doctor |
Retinol has far more evidence. If your skin tolerates it, it's the stronger option for lines. The duo is for people who want a gentle, consistent routine without vitamin A. We compare the main retinol alternatives, including peptides, in our retinol guide.
15Why a set rather than two separate buys
Buying a serum and a cream separately means guessing: will the textures layer without pilling, will the scents clash, will one undo the other? The two products in the duo were designed to be used together. They share an aloe and jojoba base, both carry hyaluronic acid, and the serum's light, fast-absorbing texture sits comfortably under the cream's richer one.
There's a practical side too. Both are full size and run out at roughly the same time, around two months, so you restock once rather than juggling two different refill dates. And because they arrive in one box, the duo is ready to give without any extra wrapping.
16Morning and evening with the duo
In the morning, the goal is hydration that lasts and a smooth base for SPF and makeup. Two pumps of serum, a minute to settle, then the day cream and sunscreen. The cream's light-reflecting finish helps skin look fresh straight away.
In the evening, the goal is repair-friendly comfort. Use the serum again on clean skin. If your skin is dry, follow with the day cream; if you prefer something lighter at night, the serum can go under your usual night moisturiser. Because there's no vitamin A in either product, there's no need to keep anything to evenings or take nights off.
Whatever you choose, keep the order the same every day. Consistency is what turns two products into a routine, and a routine into visible results over eight to twelve weeks.
17Scent and allergens
The serum has a delicate floral scent with amber on a sweet, powdery background and declares three fragrance allergens: Linalool, Geraniol and Citronellol. The cream smells of melissa with a soft floral note and declares four: Benzyl Salicylate, Limonene, Citral and Linalool. Neither is fragrance-free. If your skin is reactive, patch test each on your inner forearm for five days before using it on your face.
18How to use the duo
| Step | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cleanse | Cleanse, removing SPF and makeup |
| 2 | Peptide Serum, two pumps | Peptide Serum, two pumps |
| 3 | Anti-Age Day Cream | Day Cream if your skin is dry, or your night moisturiser |
| 4 | SPF 30 or higher | Nothing else needed |
Around the eyes, add our Smoothing Eye Cream after the serum. On very dry skin in the evening, a few drops of face oil can go on last; face oil or moisturiser? explains the order. The set lasts around two months with daily use. Give it eight to twelve weeks before judging it on fine lines.
19Who it suits
It suits you if your skin is mature or dry and you want a simple two-step routine; retinol irritated you; you want products designed to layer rather than a mix-and-match guess; or you're buying a gift, since both arrive in one box.
Skip it, or check first, if you need fragrance-free products; your skin is very oily and prefers gels; you're pregnant or breastfeeding and haven't asked your doctor; or you want the best-evidenced option for lines, which is retinol. If you'd prefer a plant retinol alternative instead of a peptide, see our Retinol Alternative Serum and Moisturiser, or compare the routines.
20What it adds up to
The duo is a complete, gentle morning routine in one box. Its strongest evidence is for hydration: hyaluronic acid in both steps, aloe as the base of both, humectants and lipids that keep skin comfortable. Its hero peptide has a plausible mechanism and an early elasticity result. And we've told you which effects are optical and which build over time.
If you want a routine you'll actually keep, with no vitamin A and nothing to overthink, this is the set we'd point you to.
Start with the duo on its own for the first two weeks, so you know how your skin responds. After that, add an eye cream or a face oil if you want to, one product at a time. Keep the core two steps unchanged, and judge the results at the twelve-week mark.
21Your questions, answered
What is hexapeptide-11?
A six-amino-acid peptide first found in yeast. In a lab study it switched on skin cells' own maintenance and antioxidant systems, and a small test found improved skin elasticity.
Should I use serum or moisturiser first?
Serum first, on clean skin, then moisturiser. Thinnest to thickest.
Are peptides as good as retinol?
Not on evidence. Retinol has decades of trials. Peptides are gentler and need no adjustment period.
Can I use the duo morning and night?
Yes. Use the serum both times; the day cream every morning, and at night if your skin is dry.
How long does the duo last?
Around two months with daily use.
Is the duo a good gift?
Yes. Both full-size products arrive together in one box.
Does the 60-Day Promise apply?
Yes, on your first order, conditions apply, one set per claim.
