Hydroxyethyl Urea Body Cream
A rich, fast-absorbing body cream for rough elbows, knees, heels and dry legs.
A body cream with hydroxyethyl urea, a urea-derived humectant, 2% panthenol, glycerin, sodium PCA and hyaluronic acid, on a base of organic sunflower oil. Scented with bergamot, bitter orange and ylang-ylang. Every ingredient and all ten declared allergens are named below.
Hydroxyethyl urea, a urea-derived humectant. 2% panthenol (pro-vitamin B5). Glycerin, sodium PCA and sodium hyaluronate to draw in and hold water. Organic sunflower seed oil and plant triglycerides to soften. Vitamin E and ascorbyl palmitate as antioxidants.
Once or twice a day, on dry or slightly damp skin after showering. Massage in until absorbed, with extra on elbows, knees and heels. Don't apply to broken skin. Wash your hands afterwards if you'll touch your eyes.

Most body lotions feel nice for an hour, then the rough patches on elbows, knees and shins come straight back. Oils alone soften the surface but add little water to the dry outer layer.
This cream combines four humectants that pull water into the skin's outer layer with 2% panthenol and plant oils that help keep it there. It absorbs fast, so you can get dressed straight away.

Hydroxyethyl urea and panthenol
Hydroxyethyl Urea · Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)
Urea is part of the skin's own natural moisturising factor. Hydroxyethyl urea is a close relative made for skincare: a humectant that draws water into the skin's outer layer, with less stickiness than glycerin. It is a different molecule from urea, and the research on urea doesn't automatically apply to it.
Panthenol turns into pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) in the skin. In a study of creams with 1% and 5% panthenol, both reduced water loss through the skin after 30 days of daily use. Ours contains 2%.

Camargo, Gaspar & Maia Campos, 2011, Journal of Cosmetic Science. Healthy volunteers applied creams with 0.5%, 1% or 5% panthenol to the forearm daily. Only the 1% and 5% creams reduced water loss over 30 days. Our 2% sits between the two.

Hydroxyethyl urea
Lab and panel tests comparing hydroxyethyl urea with glycerin for water uptake, moisturisation and skin feel.
Hydroxyethyl urea moisturised about as well as glycerin, with less stickiness and gloss.
Published in a trade journal by the company that made the ingredient. It isn't an independent trial.
Panthenol
Volunteers applied creams with 0.5%, 1% or 5% panthenol to the forearm daily for 30 days, and to skin washed with a detergent.
The 1% and 5% creams reduced water loss through the skin after 30 days. Panthenol creams also reduced water loss after detergent washing.

Urea, for comparison
Volunteers applied urea or urea-free moisturisers to normal skin for up to 20 days, then were exposed to an irritant detergent.
The urea creams lowered water loss and reduced irritant reactions. The urea-free creams didn't.
It tested plain urea. Our cream contains hydroxyethyl urea, so this doesn't transfer directly.
Sodium PCA
A review of research on PCA, the largest single part of the skin's own natural moisturising factor.
Creams with at least 2% PCA or PCA salt improved dry skin.

Sunflower seed oil
In a small study of 19 adults across two groups, one group applied sunflower seed oil to one forearm and olive oil to the other, twice a day for four weeks.
Sunflower seed oil preserved the skin barrier and improved hydration. Olive oil weakened the barrier.

Panthenol turns into vitamin B5 in the skin and helps it hold on to water. In a 30-day study, creams with 1% and 5% panthenol reduced water loss through the skin.
